The $ 55 million (BD20.7m) school is going to be part of the Durrat Al Bahrain Project and will be located on the edge of its golf course overlooking the sea.

It is owned by Dubai-based school management company Taaleem, which establishes and operates early childhood facilities, primary and secondary schools in various parts of the region.

The school will cover an area of 85,000sqm, accommodating about 2,500 students from the kindergarten to secondary stages.

"It will have eco-friendly designs such as shaded walkways throughout the site to minimise on air-conditioned corridor space, and landscaped areas watered with grey water (non-industrial wastewater) from the sinks, showers and condensate from air-conditioners," said Taaleem marketing manager Melissa Jarvinen.

"Another eco-friendly design that will be used for educational purposes is the installation of renewable energy demo projects such as wind turbines, some photovoltaic panels on the roof and solar thermal panels."

The school will offer a dual curriculum option of the National Curriculum of England and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes until the last two years of high school when all students will follow the IB’s Diploma Programme.

It will be feature a large auditorium, multiple gyms, two swimming pools, running track and boarding facilities.

"Taaleem has made considerable strides in the UAE’s education sector and is eager to open its first school abroad," said Jarvinen.

"We intended as a first venture outside UAE to bring the highest level of educational standards employed by all our school to Bahrain, which will add a premium school to the country’s already strong portfolio of high quality schools."

Work on the first phase of the school will be completed in September next year, when kindergarten and primary school students can be enrolled.
