ALO chief praises steps to protect workers’ rights

They reviewed the situations in the labour market in the Gulf Cooperation Council in general and the UAE in particular and efforts being made by the UAE Ministry of Labour to protect workers’ rights and interests of employers at times of crisis.

The ministry’s future plans to create a safe, stable working environment in coordination with the ALO were also discussed.

Ghobash said the UAE was keen to boost relations with Arab and international organisations, including the ALO, and share experiences in issues related to labour market.

Ibrahim Al Amari, Deputy Director of Wages Protection System (WPS) Office, briefed the ALO chief about the UAE’s efforts to protect rights of workers with emphasis on the WPS and My Salary service.

The ALO chief praised the unprecedented initiatives launched by the UAE for regulating its labour market, describing such measures as pilot.

He said what he had seen refuted allegations that aim to distort the UAE’s excellence in respect of labour rights.

He also appreciated the UAE’s efforts to provide adequate accommodation to workers at par with the best international standards to spur workers to increase production.

Maher Al Obad, Executive Director for Inspection, Ministry of Labour, said, “There are red lines and no one will be allowed to cross them: the provision of suitable housing to the worker and full payment of wages as per the work contract.

“The WPS is a proactive measure to lay down sound basis in this respect,” he added.
