Last night, delegates representing 129 countries held a meeting at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to nominate the host country for the new agency.

It is the first international agency to be headquartered outside North America or Europe.

The conference witnessed also participation from 15 countries, among the United States, Japan, and Australia, who signed the document of establishing the agency which later included membership of 129 countries.
Earlier, Director of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) Dr. Naji Al-Mutairi hailed as well UAE’s Abu Dhabi hosting of the agency.

The meeting resulted in a number of positives, he said, including the uncontested approval of Abu Dhabi’s hosting of the IRENA headquarters, the creation of a technological centre for the agency in Germany and a coordinating centre in Austria.

He added that the summit witnessed a fierce contest over the position of Director-General, which was won by Helene Pelosse from France.
