The Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Ahmed Hassan Al Hammadi, said this while speaking at the 53rd Annual Regular Session of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in Vienna.

Qatar is focusing on cooperation between Arab states through national, regional and international institutions, including the IAEA, in order to gain international capability and experience for national development, Al Hammadi said.

He said, Qatar, through the Gulf Cooperation Council, was to implement the necessary studies in order to build the infrastructure for the peaceful utilization of nuclear energy and other projects concerning technical cooperation which has been agreed upon between the IAEA and the GCC.

Qatar is working to implement a scientific cooperation agreement with the IAEA and is seeking help from the Agency’s experts. Qatar will benefit from the experience of the Agency’s experts in organising the observation and control of radioactive materials, Dr Al Hammadi said.

The Qatari delegate expressed deep concern over the IAEA’s inability to implement the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. All states in the Middle East have signed the treaty with the exception of Israel.
