The panel, chaired by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, will try to solve at the earliest disputes between employers and their workers.

“The first strike that involved 2,000 Asian workers was illegal as it was organised by workers before negotiating their demands with their employer,” Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Labour Subah Al Dossairi said.

Initial report by the ministry termed the strike by the Asian workers as illegal and affirmed the commitment of their company to the occupational safety measures.

He said the striking workers demanded better living conditions and pay rise to cope with inflation. “We have sent labour inspectors to the camp and they highlighted the good living environment prevailing there,” he added

The first strike and two other strikes came to an end after the intervention by the Ministry, Al Dossairi said.

He said that the workers were encouraged to stage a strike following statements by the Indian Ambassador to Bahrain about his country’s plan to set a minimum salary of BD100 for Indian workers abroad.
