MANAMA – The Bahrain government has dismissed an allegation that police patrol ran over a Bahraini rioter leading to his death.

Mohammed Ibrahim Yacoub, 19, died on Wednesday night and Al Wefaq National Islamic Society blamed the police for his death. The society’s statement released on Thursday referred to a circulated video showing the boy being chased by police patrols. The society claimed that the boy was stuck between two cars and sustained injuries.

The minister of interior rejected the allegation and posted a video in its twitter account showing the boy with no injuries and talking to officers inside the police patrol shortly after his arrest. The medical report of the boy issued by the Ministry of Health attributed his death to cardiorespiratory arrest as part of sickle cell anemia complications.

The General Director of Central Governorate Police said on Thursday that Yacoub was one of several arrested for rioting in Sitra on Wednesday evening.

“As soon as Yacoub was arrested he stated that he suffered from Sickle Cell Anemia complications. Police immediately called an ambulance which took him to a hospital. He was provided with all necessary and appropriate medical care but he passed away as a result of his disease,” he explained.

Clashes and violence are common in many parts of Bahrain that lead to disturbances to residents and massive traffic jams, especially with rioters blocking roads.
