The Premier also told MPs that the hospital was already providing cardiac services to the public and that its emergency unit was open to everyone.
But, this was not up to the liking of MPs who accused the government of running the hospital as a private sector establishment, charging the public while offering free services to military personnel.
MPs voted in May on an urgent proposal to have the hospital provide services to everyone, to help ease pressure on Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC).
The same proposal was submitted by Al Wefaq bloc two years ago but it was rejected by parliament, which said the hospital was a military unit and that should stay that way.
However, MPs had a change of heart in May after discovering that the hospital was operating as a private hospital.
Budget
Parliament public utilities and environment affairs chairman Jawad Fairooz said the hospital was getting money from the government’s budget so it was an establishment for all people without differentiation.
"It is ridiculous that Asians, working for the Defence and Interior Ministries, are allowed free services there, while the public is forced to pay," he said.
Mr Fairooz said that since the hospital was not only working to serve military personnel, the public were entitled for free treatment.
Parliament financial and economic affairs committee chairman Abduljalil Khalil said the hospital was making more money than any private hospital in the country.
"They made BD15 million last year in profit out of cardiac operations and treatment, since everyone knows that SMC doesn’t have a strong facility or specialists’ line-up and many people go to the BDF Hospital for related medical services.
Defence Ministry spokesman Brigadier Rashid Fulaifal told MPs in May that no military facility was able to change its assigned duties without permission from His Majesty King Hamad.
"The hospital is one of them and although it is restricted to military personnel," he said.
"We are providing cardiac services to the public and our emergency unit is open to all."
