The protesters late on Friday called for the downfall of the Al Khalifa regime and the release of jailed opposition activists.

The regime forces fired tear gas and birdshot to disperse the demonstrators during overnight protest, AFP reported.

Several protesters were wounded during the protest but the injured could not be shifted to hospital for treatment for fear that police would arrest them.

Human rights activists say that government thugs dressed in plain clothes were present as police crushed the protests.

"With our blood and our souls, we will avenge the martyrs," and "Down With Hamad," shouted the demonstrators. "The people have chosen democracy and will not give up," the protesters’ banners read.

The fresh protest rally came as the United States is resuming arms sales to Bahrain where a deadly crackdown on anti-regime protests is underway.

The move has drawn condemnation from rights groups which consider it as yet another blow to the US’ credibility.

Bahrain has been witnessing a revolution that began early last year. Since then scores of people have been killed and thousands more detained.
