Bahrain’s shura lacks depth

Dr Jasim Husain angered Shura members with his comments made in an interview with an Arabic newspaper and on Sunday the council issued an official call for an apology.

But he was unrepentant yesterday, saying that while Shura members might disagree with his criticism, they should recognise his right to make it.

"The Shura Council knows that we have not really contributed anything of significant value on issues or solving problems and it is not a really serious institution," he said.

"It’s just a gathering of people and they just meet and talk about developments. There is no commitment on the part of a number of its members.

"They are offended by my comments, but I was speaking not for myself but for a good number of people. Shura members are not like MPs, who follow issues day-by-day, are always in the news giving their views and have offices where they meet the public.

"I think this body should have no legislative power to begin with, but beside that my argument was this council has not really been an institution to be reckoned with – it is not involved in the day-to-day issues of the nation – with a few exceptions."

Dr Husain said he found the call for him to apologise inappropriate.

"I was hoping my comments would encourage these members to discuss more issues but they said ‘no, you really offended us’ and they have issued a statement which was published in the Press, saying that I should take back my comments and apologise," he said.

"I am not going to apologise, it is not something worth apologising over. I was expressing thoughts like anyone else – people have the right to express their views, there is no need for apology.

"As MPs, we always have people who comment about us and lash out at the parliament, but we don’t ask them to apologise.

"As individuals and public figures, everyone is subject to questioning. They certainly have every right to disagree with what I said, but the issue is not that I have to apologise, there is no basis for stuff like that.

"I was not speaking for myself alone and there are many people who share this belief."

Shura Council members were not available for comment yesterday.
