He was giving the keynote during the opening of the Technical Workshop on Darfur Peace Talks, which kicked off at the Doha Sheraton Hotel yesterday.
The event was attended by Dijbrill Bassole, the AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator,
“The peace process, though, is thwarted by some difficulties which slow the pace of progress in the substantive issues of the final solution for several reasons, the most important of which is a lack of confidence between the parties of the conflict, differences among the armed movements, the difficulties these movements face in their attempt to unify and the need to make the peace process inclusive,” Al Mahmoud noted. The Minister added: “In addition to consolations with partners and the confliction parties we have found that time has come to get another kind of support ie the technical expertise.”
“The invitation for this workshop was based on this context. The objective is to hold deliberations and present proposals on the best ways of expediting the peace process to reach a comprehensive resolution for the conflict in Darfur, in addition to presenting specific recommendations on the best ways of involving the civil society of Darfur in the ongoing peace process,” Al Mahmoud said.
Bassole, in press statement hailed Qatar’s Efforts on Darfur Peace talks. “The efforts exerted by Qatar to establish peace in Darfur are appreciated and welcomed by the international community,” he said.
The next round of the peace talks scheduled to be held in Doha on October 28, will be preceded by a forum for Sudanese civil society organisations including from Darfur.
