‘Darfur workshop calls for seizing opportunity’

Al-Mahmoud called, in the final communique at the conclusion of the workshop, on all the relevant parties, especially the parties to the conflict and segments of the Darfur society to seize the window of opportunity available through the Doha peace process in order to reach a consensus to redress the causes of conflicts and achieve a final and comprehensive agreement that realizes reconciliation and development at the socio-economic level in Darfur.

The Qatari minister also welcomed the contribution to the proceedings of the workshop by the participating experts and the subsequent recommendations which were primarily based on the real states of affairs on the ground in Darfur.

The Qatari minister co-chaired the workshop along with the AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator Djibrill Bassole.

Participating in the workshop were experts from the United Nations, African Union, Arab League, Organization of the Islamic Conference and the European Union.

Representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, member states of the Darfur contact group and representatives from community of Sant Egidio in Rome and Centre of Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva also took part in the workshop.

The Minister also announced that due to the convening of the meeting of the African Council of Peace and Security at the summit level in Abuja on 29th of October, which will discuss among the topics on its agenda the issue of peace process in Darfur and also due to the fact that an invitation to attend that meeting is being addressed to the AU-UN Joint Chief Mediator, it has been decided that the commencement of the Doha peace process be postponed to 16 November 2009 instead of 28 October 2009.

The Qatari official called on parties to the conflict to take the necessary steps towards rebuilding confidence among them and creating an atmosphere conductive to the achievement of a just and comprehensive solution.
