Abdullah Hashim, who is representing the case on behalf of the third and fourth suspects, told the Bahrain Tribune yesterday: “We have submitted all the documents to prove that our clients are innocent. Our defence is strong and we believe that the decision would be in our favour when the hearing takes place at the Higher Criminal Court on Wednesday.”
The charges against the group of six include financing terror networks and working on plans to carry out attacks in foreign countries. The other two accused in the case – a Bahraini and a GCC national – were charged in absentia.
“The only possibility is that the third suspect could be sentenced for a year. The charges against him include participating in military operations outside Bahrain,” said Hashim.
Lawyer Fareed Ghazi, handling the case of the first suspect who is in his mid-20s, echoed the same views reiterating that the court decision would be in favour of his client.
The other accused being part of the group are two Saudi nationals – Abdulrahim Al Murbati and Khalil Janahi – while the suspect, who is currently serving two-year imprisonment in UAE, is 23-year-old Bahraini Adel Moahmmed Mahmood Abdul Khaliq who was arrested on January 14, 2007.
Electronic equipment were seized from the Bahraini, which were cleared as not dangerous by explosive experts. Adel was arrested for having links with terrorist organisations and managing their financial affairs.
The Federal Supreme Court in the UAE later sentenced him to two years imprisonment.
Hashim who is also handling Adel case said that Adel was in detention for nine months until the verdict was announced which was equal to one-year sentence according to the UAE laws.
“This means that he has to serve another seven months and we will push with the authorities to serve his remaining sentence in Bahrain,” he said.
