"Given the common threats posed to the regional countries, including terrorism, the destructive actions taken by ISIL and extremism, there is a need for increasing consultations as well as security and defense cooperation between Tehran and Muscat," Amir Abdollahian said, addressing the Third Meeting of Iran-Oman Joint Strategic Committee in the Omani capital on Monday.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister pointed to the good and friendly Iran-Oman relations, and said, "Continued consultations with Oman that has realistic, balanced and logical viewpoints can play an influential role in regional stability and security."

Amir Abdollahian arrived in Muscat on Sunday to take part in the two countries’ joint strategic committee meeting.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister is also due to meet senior Omani officials to further broaden mutual cooperation between Tehran and Muscat.

The joint Strategic Cooperation Committee meeting today was presided with the Iranian and Omani deputy foreign ministers.

Last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Omani counterpart Yusuf bin Alawi in a meeting in Muscat warned against the rise of terrorist moves in the region.

During the meeting held on the sidelines of trilateral talks among Zarif, his US counterpart John Kerry and EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton in Oman’s capital, the Iranian and Omani foreign ministers underlined the need for confronting the spread of terrorism in the region.

Zarif and Bin Alawi also discussed the activities of terrorist groups in the region, and called for collective efforts to uproot terrorism in the Middle East.

The two officials also discussed other regional and international developments, and stressed the need for enhancement of all-out ties between the two countries.
