EU vows support to democracy, security in Yemen

The EU and the international community strongly support President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his government’s efforts to complete the democratic transition as per the agreed upon Gulf initiative, especially the restructure of the security bodies.

He added that the EU will help security bodies’ restore control over Al-Qaeda bastions in southern governorate.

In this regard, De Kerchove unveiled that four EU security experts will arrive in Yemen in the coming three weeks to help Yemen in restructure the security apparatus.

He underlined that all concerned parties, topped by the intelligence bodies, must coordinate their efforts and work shoulder to shoulder to combat terrorists.

De Kerchove disclosed that the EU is working now with the police academy on training the Yemeni officers in forensic medicine and forensic evidence and enhancing the police efficiency to conduct investigations in the future in addition to another project of setting up a modern civil registration and issuing identity cards with contemporary systems.

The new civil registration will be more effective in the democratic or counterterrorism fields, he said.
