Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki made the announcement at a joint Press conference with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, after the two signed the agreement.

The agreement was part of an accord which encompassed political, economic, trade, tourism, culture, health, agriculture and industrial relations between the two countries. It also paved the way for initiating transport links between the two countries.

The meeting was described as the first ever high-level joint commission between Bahrain and Iran. The significance of the meeting was that it saw the merger of both political and economic committees.

The two ministers expressed determination to adopt measures that would bolster trade between the two countries.

Stating that bilateral economic cooperation was based on oil and gas, Shaikh Khalid said the joint oil and gas technical committee was expected to meet in January to activate the Memorandum of Understanding on natural gas, signed by Mottaki during his last visit to Bahrain.

The joint committee was expected to meet twice every year to review the progress of the agenda on the agreement, he said.
