The council meeting, chaired by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Salem Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the council, listened to a detailed explanation on the project given by Salah Butti Obaid, Director of the Sharjah Planning and Survey Department.
Obaid said that department will soon begin carrying out studies to assess the effect on areas in which the railway network will pass through. He reaffirmed the importance of the GCC Railway’s project’s complete integration through comprehensive transportation plans carried out in coordination with relevant specialised bodies.
The project aims to connect the UAE’s vital ports, residential and industrial areas with one another, which will serve to enhance economic growth and social development in the country using a safe and fast method of transportation that is environment friendly and spans a distance of 1,200 km across the UAE. The first phase of the railway’s commercial operations is expected to begin in 2014.
The council also approved the list of housing plots to be distributed in the emirate of Sharjah, which brings the total number of beneficiaries to 292 from January to March 7, 2012.
