The annual GRM is one of the principal activities of the GRC Cambridge, with the goal of enhancing knowledge and research about the Gulf region through providing an academic environment to foster Gulf studies and to encourage scholarly exchange among those working on or interested in current developments that are defining the Gulf region and its constituent societies. Particular emphasis is given to encourage young scholars, especially those from the GCC countries and including those studying abroad, to engage in the debate and take part in research collaboration.
Although the Board briefly discussed the restructuring of the Gulf Research Center Dubai, it focused primarily on reviewing the previous and current Gulf Research Meetings as well as planning for next year’s GRM. The 2011 Gulf Research Meeting, which is taking place from 6 to 9 July at the University of Cambridge, offers 16 parallel workshops with well over 200 papers being presented on Gulf-related research. The total number of GRM participants this year has significantly surpassed 300.
The Board also reviewed other activities of the GRCC, including lectures, visiting scholars, networking, publications and the new GRCC Media Program.
