“The independent countries in the region will bear a heavier responsibility to prevent clashes inside Syria, and all countries that are interested in establishing stability and security in the very important region of the Middle East should make joint efforts to restore peace in Syria,” Mehmanparast, who is now in the Chinese city of Shanghai, told IRNA on Friday.
These countries should prepare the ground for resolving the Syrian issue through some ‘Syrian-Syrian’ talks between the government and insurgents, he added.
It seems that Annan’s efforts to stop acts of terror and the transfer of chemical weapons to Syria were not pleasing for the meddling countries, the Iranian spokesperson pointed out.
He emphasized that such countries made no efforts to implement Annan’s six-point peace plan for Syria.
Mehmanparast once again emphasized that Iran would proceed with its efforts to establish security in the region.
The Islamic Republic has made great efforts to reinforce security in the region, particularly in Syria, he said.
Addressing a press conference in Geneva on Thursday, Annan announced his decision to end his mission in Syria, citing lack of support and increasing militarization of the unrest.
Annan, who was appointed to the task on February 23, proposed a six-point peace plan to restore calm in Syria.
The proposal envisaged a ceasefire between foreign-backed insurgents and the Syrian government forces, a deal which went into effect in mid-April but failed to end the violence as the insurgents refused to lay down their arms.
Annan’s plan called for the realization of a ceasefire between the government and the opposition and also urged that humanitarian groups be allowed to have access to the population, detainees be released, and a political dialogue be started.
