Judicial body vows legal action against defamers – Opposition groups condemn police beatings of protesters

The statement accused that a group of people have been systematically working to destabilize the pillars of the state and shake the trust in the judicial system through fabricated accusations. The council thanked HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for their unconditional support.
The statement affirmed that justice through the legal system in Kuwait is guaranteed by the efforts of judicial officials and judges, adding that those who defame the law and its employees will have to face legal procedures for their actions. The statement came after a number of audio and video tapes targeting a number of senior judicial and political figures were posted online in the past few days.
The National Assembly meanwhile decided to debate the attacks on the judiciary in today’s session. In yesterday’s session, the Assembly passed the children protection law, the national military service law and amendments to the capital markets law. The session involved strong verbal exchanges between MP Abdullah Al-Turaiji and Minister of Commerce and Industry Abdulmohsen Al-Mudej.
In another development, opposition groups strongly condemned the attack by elite special forces on opposition protesters who had gathered Monday night to press for reforms and call for the release of several political prisoners including opposition leader Musallam Al- Barrak. The Popular Action Movement strongly deplored the action and called for an emergency meeting of the opposition groups to draw a new strategy.
The National Democratic Alliance and the Progressive Movement both said the interior ministry violated the law by beating peaceful demonstrators. The interior ministry however said that it had warned protesters beforehand against violating the law which requires that organizers of public gatherings should obtain a license from the ministry.
According to activists, police arrested around 15 protesters including one woman and a handicapped man who was on a wheelchair. The detainees included former MP Mohammad Al-Kandari, rights activists Nawaf Al-Hendal and lawyer Abdulmohsen Al-Ateeqi.
