“We have environmental concerns over the subject, but our friends in Iran have assured that the situation is under control,” Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Khalid Al- Jarallah told reporters while attending the celebrations at the Iranian Embassy marking the Iranian Revolution Day.

“We hope the concern created by the fact that the nuclear reactor is close to Kuwait is eventually eliminated.” Al-Jarallah was referring to the Bushehr nuclear plant located in the Iranian coastal city of Bushehr which is only a few kilometers away from Kuwait’s shore on the opposite side of the Arabian Gulf.

Asked about an Iraqi government official’s statements in which he proclaimed that Kuwait agreed to cancel the two final stages of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port project, Al-Jarallah commented by reiterating an agreement reached between the two countries as per which Kuwait would not construct the fourth and supposedly final phase of the project after the first three phases “which would have no negative effect on navigation at the Khor Abdullah.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian Ambassador to Kuwait, Rouhollah Qahramani, addressed a number of topics while speaking to reporters as part of the event, including recent statements of Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Al-Thani in which he called for establishing an organization for countries overlooking the Arabian Gulf.

“We are confident that a similar organization would be beneficial and effective in resolving pending issues in the region,” the ambassador said.
