In another development, Shiite MP Faisal Al-Duwaisan yesterday praised Kuwait’s policy after allowing the reopening of the Syrian embassy to Kuwait closed about two years ago in protest against the Syrian regime’s atrocities against the Syrian people. Duwaisan said that the Kuwaiti foreign policy, overseen by HH the Amir, has lived up to its reputation of mediating to bridge the gaps between Gulf and Arab countries.
The lawmaker, a staunch supporter of the Syrian regime, said that Kuwait’s move could open the door for other Arab countries to follow suit “after it had been proved that what happened in Syria was not a popular revolution but a terrorist plot to divide the Arab world”. A number of Syrian diplomats arrived in Kuwait yesterday to reopen the consular section to renew passports of Syrians residing in Kuwait. The embassy is expected to start operating within the next two weeks. Kuwait had announced that the diplomats’ return did not mean the reopening of the embassy but to allow the Syrian government to renew passports of over 140,000 Syrians living and working in the country.
MP Ahmad Lari meanwhile called on the government to complete the amendments of laws related to the five-year development plan (2015-16/2019-20), expected to be sent to the National Assembly soon. Lari specifically mentioned the public tenders law and the privatization law, saying that the government should send the proposed amendments to the concerned Assembly panels. He said that regarding the tenders law, there have been differences in views between a number of government sides on the amendments, but recently these differences have been sorted out. Lari said that the Cabinet has already reviewed a number of amendments to the privatization law and it is expected to refer them to the Assembly soon.
