Speaking at a seminar in Kuwait Bar Syndicate Monday, Al-Mulaifi slammed the interim government for its failure to lessen the impact of the global financial meltdown on Kuwait’s economy. “It is disappointing to see the executive authority engaged in a crime against the rights of Kuwaitis. Local companies are on the brink of declaring bankruptcy while the government is planning to terminate a large number of national manpower, allegedly to address the crisis,” he lamented.

Condemning the continued silence over the government’s ineffectiveness on the pretext that Kuwait is about to host the Arab Economic Forum, Al-Mulaifi stressed the forum will not change the economic status of the region. He also urged the ministries to boycott the forum which, he said, is a mere display of arrogance. On the other hand, MP Musallam Al-Barrak asserted the political situation in Kuwait has continued to deteriorate while the National Assembly has become a grocery store. He said the premier holds the key to the store, so he can close or open it anytime he wishes.

Pointing out a number of questions have been raised on the Dow Chemical deal, Al-Barrak claimed some people are pushing for the project for their own interests. He was also surprised by the statements of some oil sector officials, who threatened to resign from their posts once the project is cancelled.

Meanwhile, MP Jamaan Al-Harbash has warned acting Finance Minister Mustafa Al-Shamali on the dire consequences of rescheduling the loan payments of citizens. Al-Harbash revealed the government is planning to reschedule the payment of loans to impose high interest rates through a fund that was established earlier to help citizens pay their debts. He argued this fund was established to ease the financial burdens of the citizens, not to aggravate their problems.
