"What is happening in Kuwait indicates that there is an attempt to suspend parliamentary life. Kuwaiti people will not accept this," veteran former MP Ahmed al-Saadun told a public rally which was attended by around 200 people.

"They are searching for justifications to stop the elections" scheduled for May 17, the three-time speaker charged.

The law, approved by the government last week, imposes restrictions on all forms of public gatherings.

Under the law, organisers must apply in writing to the interior ministry which has the right to block any event.

The legislation also allows police and security forces to disperse public gatherings in the event of any infringement.

"There are some people working to drag this country into serious confrontations. It is a plot to suspend parliament," Islamist former MP Jamaan al-Harbash said.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah called early elections last month following a standoff between parliament and the government.
