A Kuwaiti lawmaker has filed a motion to grill the interior minister on alleged abuses by his ministry.

MP Mohammad Juwaihel’s grilling is based on five main issues that include the failure to take the appropriate action against those who forged documents in their citizenship applications and the non-application of the law on those who broke the law by keeping their dual citizenship.

The lawmaker wants also answers on the allegedly widespread arms that harm national security, alleged corruption at the traffic department and allegations of financial irregularities, Kuwaiti media reported. The grilling alleges that the minister failed to take the necessary legal action even though a number of forgeries had been committed in the process of granting Kuwaiti citizenship that naturalised many people in violation of the law.

Al Juwaihel said that Kuwaiti citizenship was reinstated in the case of several people after it was withdrawn from them for breaking the law and holding the citizenship of other countries. Kuwaiti law does not permit citizens to take other nationalities and Juwaihel had placed the citizenship issue at the top of his election campaign, Kuwait Times reported on Wednesday.

The grilling also alleges the existence of widespread assaults on policemen and public employees without proper legal reaction from the interior, a situation that eventually encouraged more assaults and attacks and resulted in a state of lawlessness.

Juwaihel told reporters that he has strong evidence and documents to prove all the allegations he has made. The debate of the grilling is expected to take place after two weeks unless the minister demands a two-week postponement, the daily said.
The two previous quizzing motions against the prime minister and the information minister ended just after the debate without filing a no-confidence motion.
