"The six GCC member countries believe the Lebanese government headed by Prime Minister Saad Al-Hariri is capable of realizing the aspirations of the Lebanese people," Al-Attiyah said in a statement to KUNA here.

He made the remarks after meeting Al-Hariri to congratulate him, on behalf of the GCC members, on the parliamentary confidence won by the latter’s government.

The meeting was also attended by Charge D’Affaires of Kuwait Embassy in Beirut Jassem Al-Najem.

Al-Attiyah voiced satisfaction about the steadily growing ties between Lebanon on one hand and the GCC member countries on the other.

"The exemplary bilateral ties are based on common understanding and respect and a shared desire to materialize the aspirations of our nations for stability, prosperity and welfare," he affirmed.

"Lebanon has a particularly important status in the hearts of the GCC leaders and nations due to the numerous common features between the two sides which have been brought to the limelight during the talks with Al-Hariri.

"The talks also explored the ways to catalyze cooperation in the political, diplomatic, economic and social domains and to activate the free trade agreement (FTA) with Lebanon," Al-Attiyah disclosed.

"The FTA reached several years ago deals with three key domains namely commodities, services and investment," he said, noting that the two sides agreed to put the deal into full play.

As for the formation of Al-Hariri’s government, Al-Attiyah said Lebanon has entered into a new stage of its history featured by stability, security and prosperity.

"The Doha accord on reconciliation among the Lebanese political factions, sponsored by Qatari Amir Sheikh Hamad Bin-Khalifa Al-Thani in May, 2008, has started to bear fruit.

"The deal put an end to 18-months of political standoff and laid the groundwork for the presidential and parliamentary elections as well as the formation of the current national unity government," he recalled.

Alongside with Taif Agreement, signed on October 22, 1989, and ratified on November 4, 1989, the deal formed a solid foundation for stability, development and progress in Lebanon, he added.

Al-Attiyah renewed the GCC commitment to support Lebanon politically and economically.
