Among Arab countries, Oman came after Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Morocco and Djibouti.

The index assesses the size of local and global conflicts, peace, social security and spending on armaments in 158 countries around the world.

Iceland tops the 2012 index, followed by Denmark, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Austria, while Somalia, followed by Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, Congo, Russia and North Korea were placed at the bottom.

The 2012 Index pointed out that if the world was more peaceful, the global economy would have brought additional economic benefit last year worth more than $ 9 trillion, which is equivalent to the size of the economies of Germany and Japan together.

Meanwhile, authorities in Oman have once again appealed to the public to help them tackle the problem of illegal immigrants after sending back home a new group of more than 800 infiltrators.
