The Sultanate’s joining the committee “is an important privilege and reflect the international community’s recognition of the important role played by Oman to safeguard intangible heritage and the interest it shows to document this heritage and preserve it for posterity,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Heritage and Culture said.

Intangible cultural heritage is described as the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills, as well as the instruments, objects, and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognise as part of their cultural heritage. It provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.

“The Sultanate is one of the leading countries that have drafted laws and legislations to safeguard tangible and intangible cultural heritage,” the spokesman pointed out.
