The Sultanate looks forward to achieving an expanded contribution of atomic energy in world peace, health, development and prosperity, said Sayyid Badr, who stressed the important role of nuclear energy in electrical power generation, water desalination, industry, medicine, agriculture and environment, among other areas.

Sayyid Badr, who delivered the Sultanate’s speech before the 53rd session of the IAEA general conference, held here said that a plan to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes in GCC states is considered a major regional project that falls within the objectives of the IAEA. The Sultanate’s project on utilising nuclear energy for peaceful purposes aims at achieving more economic prosperity and sustainable development, he added.

Following the example of other member states, the Sultanate seeks co-operation with the IAEA to enhance its national capacities in using nuclear technology to find solutions to many challenges posed by sustainable development, said Sayyid Badr, noting that, upon Oman’s joining the IAEA, Dr Anna Maria, IAEA Deputy Director-General for Technical Co-operation, visited the Sultanate to get a close look at the country’s economic, social, legislative and legal setup, as well as Oman’s developmental planning and radioactive security infrastructure.

Sayyid Badr pointed out that the Sultanate’s first projects for technical co-operation with the IAEA fall within a long-term strategy and a medium plan for peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Sayyid Badr added that the Sultanate is preparing for the implementation of the long and medium plans which form the cornerstone for a framework of technical co-operation.
