"Our main problem in Bahrain is the ruling of the Al Khalifa family not the legitimate demands of the Bahraini people; People are frustrated with the regime’s corruption and brutality," the Secretary-General of the Islamic Action Society told a press conference held at the venue of the Fars News Agency in Tehran on Sunday.
"There is a consensus among political groups, opposition parties and people in Bahrain that the dictatorial regime currently ruling the country has failed to safeguard people’s interests and should be overthrown," he added.
The opposition leader went on to say that the revolutionaries in Bahrain attach great importance to this issue that those who started the revolution should be able to officially form their government and prosecute the corrupt rulers.
Al-Rashed further pointed to the people’s right to decide their own fate, and said, "The Bahraini opposition has been demanding the formation of an independent election commission, which would reflect people’s will."
Rashed further said that holding a referendum would prove this to the world that only the people of Bahrain can decide about the sovereignty of their country, and that the ruling regime can no longer govern the country due to its corruption.
The press conference was also attended by prominent member of the Bahraini Al-Wafa’a Islamic Party Sheikh Mortada al-Sanadi and some other Bahraini and Iranian intellectuals.
The Bahraini regime earlier announced that the country will hold parliamentary elections on November 22, despite ongoing protests against the ruling Al Khalifa family. The revolutionaries which constitute a majority in the tiny Persian Gulf island have boycotted the voting.
