The Bahrain Pharmacists Society at an extraordinary meeting held last week called upon parliament not to pass the bill to protect economic interests of its members.

The current law regulating working of pharmacies was issued in 1997 and allows only Bahrainis with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy to open a pharmacy. The proposed bill allows investors from various nationalities to enter
the business.

During the meeting, the society drafted a letter to parliament, highlighting chances of reduction in pharmacists revenue if the number of pharmacies is allowed to increase.

Pharmacists also warned of the negative effects of the bill on patients and medical sector, as investors could risk the safety of patients by focusing only on profit.

They called upon lawmakers to safeguard the interests of their voters by banning non-specialised people from joining the sector.
