The reception for over 250 GRM attendees and special guests was co-organised by Qatar University’s Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) and the university’s Gulf Studies Programme at the College of Arts and Sciences.

“The GRM is critical in promoting academic research and scholarship on the Gulf region and QU is honoured to participate in this event.” Qatar University president Prof Sheikha al-Misnad said. “This year’s meeting workshops highlight the breadth, depth and quality of research emerging on the Gulf region, which is critical in informing policymakers, academics and the public as we work together to address the region’s challenges and opportunities.”

Qatar University’s Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) director Dr Darwish al- Emadi said the reception was organised to increase awareness of the university’s work and research in Gulf Studies. “It is an honour to host the reception as it is an ideal opportunity to broaden and deepen QU’s relationships with key partners and leading researchers and practitioners,” he said.

Qatar University leadership, faculty and graduate students from the Masters in Gulf Studies Programme and the Masters of Urban Planning and Design at the College of Engineering participated in the four-day conference. Prof al-Misnad presented a paper entitled ‘A practitioner’s perspective of the challenges of higher education in the Gulf, with particular reference to Qatar’ during the ‘Educational Challenges in the GCC in the 21st Century’ workshop.

Urban Planning and Design Masters’ students Rana al-Amawi and Rama Asadi co-authored and presented a paper incorporating research and projects produced in their sustainable urban and landscape design class.

Now in its fourth year, the GRM is organised by the Gulf Research Centre in collaboration with the University of Cambridge to provide an academic environment to foster Gulf studies and enhance knowledge and research about the region.
