In his speech on Monday night before the open debate of the Security Council on the Middle East situation, including the Palestine cause, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikh Mishal bin Hamad al-Thani stressed Qatar’s wholehearted support and the sincere diplomatic efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis through a political, participatory and inclusive process that includes all spectrums of the Syrian people and ensures the rights of all.
He called on the UN Security Council to take all possible steps guaranteed by the international law and the Charter of the United Nations, including the use of Chapter VII, to provide protection for the Syrian people, stressing the need to preserve the sovereignty, independence, national unity and territorial integrity of Syria.
The Permanent Representative said that the Security Council’s role in the Palestinian cause does not meet the aspirations of the people.
The Palestinian cause is a central issue for Arabs and Muslims, and in fact it is the most important international political issue for the international community, he said.
“Despite the international consensus that resolving that issue will not come by force or by imposing a fait accompli policy, what we’re missing is the political will towards a just and lasting solution”, Sheikh Mishal bin Hamad al-Thani said, adding that the ball is in the court of Israel to take steps toward peace.
Sheikh Mishal urged the UN Security Council to take serious action to resolve the Palestinian issue by putting pressure on the Israeli government to initiate genuine and practical measures.
