Abdul-Waheed Nur, leader of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), has backed away from his earlier opposition to the initiative, Bassole told reporters after meeting Sudanese President’s aide Nafei Ali Nafei here.
He said he met earlier with Nur to explore his position on the initiative.
"Nur assured me that he was not against holding peace talks with the Sudanese government under the Qatari initiative but he had some reservations against the initiative," Bassole made clear.
"I have conveyed Nur’s point of view to Nafei before resuming contacts with Nur.
"The initiative could lay basis for solving Darfur conflict," Bassole believes.
He voiced hope that it would bring peace, security and stability to the residents of the troubled region.
All concerned parties including the Sudanese government and Darfur armed groups showed a real desire to restore peace and stabilize the region, he underscored.
"We have to world seriously in order to overcome any obstacles and keep the momentum of building peace," he added.
Bassole is scheduled to meet the mediation panel of the Arab League as part of preparation for the peace talks to be hosted by Qatar.
The Arab panel arrived here earlier Wednesday.
Bassole started his official mission as UN-AU joint mediator in August after the elapse of Salem Ahmed Salem’s term.
