On the directives of the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H H Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani, Qatar’s delegation led by Ambassador Nasser bin Abdul Aziz Al Nasser has actively participated in discussions of all issues on the Security Council agenda in the last two years.

When elected in October 2005, Qatar received the biggest vote ever when 186 countries out of 186, the total membership of the UN voted for it.

Assistant Foreign Minister for Follow-up Affairs H E Mohamed Abdullah Al Rumeihi said: “The strong vote for Qatar indicates the esteemed position the country enjoys at regional and international levels, thanks to the wise leadership of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.”

During the past two years Qatar’s membership in the Security Council had been very active and supportive to just causes.

Most remarkably of this was Qatar’s initiative on sustainable peace in the Middle East which was approved by members of the Security Council and was discussed at a session held on December 12, 2006, chaired by the Qatari premier.

Meanwhile, Al Nasser speaking from New York, said Qatar worked during the past two years with a spirit of cooperation with other members to achieve the UN goals in protecting international peace and security, especially on issues of concern to Qatar.

“Qatar during its Security Council membership demonstrated high professionalism and dealt with various issues with moderation while committing to the UN charter, international legitimacy and international law,” he said.

This had contributed to portraying a distinguished picture of Qatar’s diplomacy at the international level and at the UN level in particular and earned Qatar respect of UN Security Council members and the rest of the UN members, he noted.

He said that the chairman of the Security Council during the last official meeting of the Council in 2007 praised on behalf of the Council members Qatar and its UN mission for the efforts made during the past two years.

This constituted an addition to Qatar’s asset of achievements as an active member in the international community under the wise leadership of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and The Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, he said.
