Speaking to a packed journalist at the Intercontinental Hotel after a consultative meeting with the clubs yesterday, the OFA chief warned that the same crisis could haunt Oman football in future as the local rules are not ‘well-suited’ with that of Fifa.
"We can resign for the sake of the nation,- he admitted.
"But the same problem will happen again if you call for a fresh election because the local rules are not compatible with that of Fifa,- he pointed out.
"If we do not find any solution to this present crisis and if we reach a dead end then we will think about that (resignation),- he said.
However, the charismatic OFA chairman reiterated that his priority is to save the country from the possible Fifa ban that could also end Oman’s 2014 World Cup dreams.
Among the heads of 37 clubs that attended the meeting, majority have reportedly told the board to suspend the three clubs Oman, Seeb and Muscat indefinitely after they breached rules and took OFA matters to local court.
"However, we are not in a mood to slap the ban on these clubs because our priority is to find a solution and save the country from the Fifa ban,- Sayyid Khalid noted.
According to Sayyid Khalid, a ban for the three clubs could also invite wrath from the fans and could also spoil the image of football in Oman.
"I am always concerned about the image of the game. We have worked hard to put Oman in a top place and it hurts when some people want to spoil that. But even after majority of these clubs called-on to take action we decided otherwise,- he said.
"It is unfair to do so because we respect the game, the players and the fans of these three clubs. So we have to think twice before doing it. As of now, we are not in hurry to do so,- he said. Nonetheless, OFA is still negotiating with these clubs to find a solution.
"Our committee which we have setup will meet the three clubs and will try and convince them,- he said.
Interestingly, the Ministry of Sports Affairs have ratified the OFA Statutes but Sayyid Khalid said there still much more to be done.
"We are pleased by that order from the Ministry. But we have requested them to also comply all other local laws to be tangible with that of Fifa,- he added.
