Northern Governorate Chief Prosecutor Nawaf Al Awadhi said the Northern Governorate Prosecution has received a notification from the Police Directorate asserting that Rajab had delivered a speech at a public rally in which he urged rally participants to stage a march, confront authorities and use violence against security forces and incited them to escalate the situation so as to ensure that the confrontations result in deaths. The notification asserted that an illegal rally was organised in Manama following his speech and resulted in disrupting public order, blocking roads and attacks against security personnel.

Al Awadhi added that the prosecution quizzed the suspect, in the presence of his lawyer, over charges of participating in the gathering and calling for an unauthorised march.

He said the prosecution also questioned the defendant about posting statements on social networking sites, defaming and humiliating security forces, which he admitted doing, and will stand trial at the Criminal Court of First Instance over charges of insulting an official body on May 16, 2012.

Al Awadhi indicated that the suspect is also accused of taking part in other illegal practices, including incitement of unlicenced rallies through social networking sites which, as revealed by investigations, led to acts of sabotage, blocking of roads, arson and damage to public and private property.
