In the past two years, Kuwait has charged dozens of people for social media posts considered offensive to the country’s emir. It’s part of similar crackdowns across the Western-allied Gulf region.
The reports Wednesday say Hijab al-Hajri was charged for Twitter posts deemed insulting to the emir. The newspaper Alaan said al-Hajri plans to appeal.
In July, Kuwait’s emir marked the Islamic holy month of Ramadan by pardoning all those convicted with insulting him.
