Assistant Under-Secretary for the Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Colonel Mohammed Rashid Buhamood said in a statement that His Majesty the King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued a decree on Wednesday for the release of 151 convicts and 74 suspects held in custody on criminal charges.

Buhamood said the pardon was part of an effort to provide relief to these people and their families with a view to spreading a spirit of tolerance in the community. The rioters and saboteurs granted pardon were held in December for damaging public property.

In one particular incident a group of youth carried out an arson attack against a private farm owned by a royal family member, Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Attiyattaalh Al Khalifa.

The assistant under-secretary said that arsonists involved in the attack were included in the pardon after Shaikh Abdulaziz welcomed the generosity of the King and dropped charges against them. The pardon came a day before a meeting between the king and religious leaders that called for religious dialogue to promote national unity.

Some of the suspects who have been pardoned expressed their joy over the royal amnesty and highlighted their desire to lead a normal life as a law-abiding citizen at a Press meet in Wednesday. The rioters are mainly youth with some of them are only 15 years old and many of them missed their examinations for being in jail.

Two brothers, Mohammed Abdulaziz Yousif (16) and Yousif Abdulaziz Yousif (15), were arrested when they were trying to explode a cylinder in the northern part of Bahrain. They confirmed being involved in riots before and said that they used to coordinate with other youth through phone. The brothers welcomed the pardon and said they were misled and promised to stay clean.

Mohammed Juma Abdullah (20) who was arrested for setting a dhow on fire repented his action and said he would resume his studies and would become a productive citizen.
