The London-based Arabic-language Rai al-Youm daily has cited informed sources saying Faisal’s presence in the Geneva II talks on Syria perhaps marks the last mission in his career as the kingdom’s foreign minister.
A number of Arab foreign ministers in the Geneva talks have also predicted changes in the foreign policies of the Middle East powerhouse, the paper said.
The prospects of the change has reportedly given rise to a heated competition in the ruling Al Saud family to grab the post.
Among the names seen likely to replace Faisal are Prince Abdulaziz bin Abdullah, deputy minister of foreign affairs, and former Saudi intelligence chief, Prince Turki al-Faisal.
This is while reports indicate that Prince Turki is more likely to be appointed as Saudi Arabia’s next foreign minister.
The changes come amid growing criticism against policies adopted by officials in Riyadh, especially on the crisis in Syria.
The Saudi government has been a major supplier of weapons and funds to the foreign-backed militant groups fighting against the Syrian government.
Saudi spy Chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz is also said to be behind numerous deadly terrorist acts in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq.
He is also widely believed to have provided an al-Qaeda linked terrorist group blamed for the August 21 chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta.
