Ghanem Al-Jemaili described relations between the Kingdom and Iraq as “special” due to cultural and social ties, Al-Yaum newspaper reported Wednesday.
Such relations should be developed for the good of both countries, he said.

Al-Jemaili said the two important issues that needed to be dealt with were security and economic cooperation.

Officials on both sides are giving great attention to these issues, which has resulted in a prisoner exchange agreement.

There has been great progress on this front and a committee consisting of various officials from both countries has been formed to follow up this matter.

In addition, fighting terrorism and protecting borders are other important bilateral issues.

The prisoner exchange agreement was signed recently in Riyadh by the Saudi and Iraqi ministers of justice.

Iraqi prisoners in the Kingdom number 100, Al-Jemaili said, confirming that Iraqi prisons are open for visits and inspection.

He said there have been a number of marriages between Saudis and Iraqis but some have not followed proper procedures that are causing them problems now.
The ambassador thanked citizens of the Eastern Province for their hospitality.
