Saudi Arabia says EU needs to speed up arming of Syrian opposition

He also called upon the UN Security Council to take a united stand on the crisis.
Addressing a joint GCC-EU meeting in Manama, Prince Saud stressed the need to change the balance of power on the ground in favor of Syrian people to achieve a peaceful settlement.

"The 
Syrian opposition is not only fighting an illegitimate regime, but also fighting a foreign occupier," Prince Saud said.

He referred to the EU resolution to lift the ban on arming the Syrian opposition, and called for the implementation of the resolution in light of the grievous realities on the ground in Syria.


“While the opposition is moving toward becoming more united, the main problem is the division among the UN Security Council members,” the minister said while highlighting the plight of Syrians.

“As we meet here today, we are all very aware of the brutal crackdown by the Syrian regime’s arsenal of killing, brutal abuses, and displacement of the Syrian people,” Prince Saud told the gathering.


He said the Syrian crisis has entered a dangerous phase, caused by the participation of foreign forces including Hezbollah militia and others supported by the Iranian National Guard and equipped with Russian weapons.

“This new reality underlines the legitimacy of the resistance in accordance with the UN Charter that confirms the right of the legitimate self defense and expulsion of foreign occupiers,” he said.


Prince Saud stressed the need for adopting a strong international position that prohibits supplying the regime with weapons, and demands the withdrawal of foreign occupying forces from Syria.
