Saudi cabinet passes new law on cooperative societies

The Cabinet meeting, which was chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, also ratified a cooperation agreement with Poland to combat crime, including terrorism.

The Cabinet further authorized Minister of Interior Prince Naif to hold talks with his Brazilian counterpart to conclude a security pact with the South American country, Culture and Information Minister Iyad Madani told the Saudi Press Agency.

Speaking about the new law for cooperative societies, Madani said a single society would have at least 12 members and that a member is required not to have more than 10 percent of a society’s shares.

He added that its money should not be confiscated except to pay debts on the orders of a court.

The Cabinet commended the king’s address to the annual Shoura Council session last Saturday and said the vision and objectives mentioned would be taken as a strategic working plan for the Kingdom.

Crown Prince Sultan briefed ministers on the outcome of his recent visit to Qatar to boost bilateral ties.

The Cabinet further praised the recently held summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Dakar, Senegal, for endorsing the new OIC charter and backed its 10-year action plan.

The Cabinet also took a number of other decisions. Among others, it appointed the board of directors of the National Water Company for seven years. Minister of Water and Electricity Abdullah Al-Hussayen will chair the seven-member board, which includes Khaled Nahhas and Khaled Al-Ghoneim as representatives from the private sector.

The Cabinet extended Rashid Al-Rashid and Abdullah Al-Abdul Qader’s membership in the Saudi Post’s board of directors for three years and appointed Amr Rajab a new member of the board.

The meeting authorized Minister of Health Dr. Abdullah Al-Manie to hold talks with his Irish counterpart to sign a memorandum of understanding on health. It also reviewed the progress of 108 water and sewage projects in various parts of the Kingdom.
