King Abdullah said deviant ideology promotes terrorism and stressed that Saudis would stand firm against terrorists.

“The great Saudi people… will stand as a strong barrier in the face of these defeated deviants and Satan’s followers," the Saudi Press Agency quoted the King as saying on Sunday.

“Crimes begin from sick and deviant minds, especially terrorism. While confronting terrorists, we should also deal with this murderous ideology that transforms deceived youth into tools of killing and destruction,” the King said. He emphasised the moderate teachings of Islam and said extremists would fade away like they did in the past and the moderate majority would remain.

The King earlier commended Saudi security forces for their bravery and sacrifices in defeating terrorists.

“There is no place amongst us for those who raise weapons against us,” he said quoting a saying of the Prophet Mohammed (peace is upon him).

On arrival at the venue, King Abdullah was greeted by Interior Minister Prince Nayef, chairman of the university’s board of directors and Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Ghamdi, the university’s president. Prince Nayef praised the King for taking a firm stand against terrorists. “This resolute stand has encouraged our security officers to fight terror,” he said. Prince Nayef later presented the King an honorary doctorate degree in security sciences.

It may be recalled that in his very first address to the Shoura Council, King Abdullah pledged to continue moderate and balanced reform in Saudi Arabia in line with the Islamic Shariah.

The King announced his commitment to fight terrorism, vowing to crush the misguided group of terrorists and murderers.

“We will fight deviant thoughts by moderate ones. There is no room for extremism in the land of the Two Holy Mosques,” he said. King Abdullah was the first to call for the establishment of an international centre for fighting terrorism. His call was forwarded to the United Nations General Assembly.

He also called for a unified Security Strategy for Combating Terror-associated Extremism and announced commitment to the United Nations relevant agreements to fight terrorism.

He promised to promote justice and continue the war against terrorism and poverty. In a short and concentrated speech, the King promised to work on improving the government’s performance and renewed his commitment to comprehensive national development that meets the people s basic needs for education, housing and health.

He also pledged to accord due attention to areas that have not received sufficient developmental assistance.
