The 78-year-old crown prince, who is believed to suffer from cancer, returned to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday after spending more than a month outside the kingdom.

According to SPA, Prince Nayef had been in Algeria for a vacation for the past weeks.

Nayef, who was named as heir to the throne following the death of the deceased Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud in October 2011, left the country for the US in March for medical tests. It remained unclear what the tests were for.

Days after his departure, the royal palace announced that the crown prince is in Algeria for a vacation after the results of medical tests he underwent in Cleveland were "reassuring."

Nayef will take over the rule of the oil-rich kingdom upon the death of King Abdullah, 87, who also suffers from health problems.

The poor health of the aging Saudi royal family has raised fears of a power vacuum at a time of growing anti-regime protests in the country.

People in Saudi Arabia, especially women, have recently become increasingly vocal in demanding their long-suppressed rights and greater freedoms, while educated youths in the country have taken strides to seriously challenge the very pillars of the hereditary kingdom.
