Speaking on the 38th anniversary of the FNC’s establishment, Al Ghurair called upon the state leadership to grant the council more powers to enable it to serve citizens better.

He pointed out that Constitutional Amendment Number 1 of 2009 had already broadened the powers conferred upon the council, in accordance with the political programme of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Shaikh Khalifa, it may be recalled, embarked upon the first ever parliamentary elections in the country on December 16, 2006. Under it, half the council members came to be elected in its 14th legislative chapter.

Al Ghurair added the FNC witnessed the participation of women for the first time with the election of eight women, constituting 22.2 per cent of the total FNC seats, reinforcing democratic principles.

Meanwhile, Dr Mohamad Salim Al Mazroui, FNC Secretary General, reiterated that the Secretariat-General of the council shall continue its efforts to help realise its full capacity to the latest international standards and practices.

“Since the FNC was constituted in 1972, it has contributed to founding a distinguished relationship between the federal authorities by involving in discussions and enacting legislations,” he said.

Ahmed bin Shabib Al Dhahiri, First Deputy FNC Speaker, said, “The FNC council members are working hard to report the country’s problems as well as the needs of citizens.”
