* Abdulhadi Khalaf is a Senior Lecturer in sociology of development, Lund University, PhD in 1972. Elected member of Bahraini Parliament in 1973-4, followed by two spells as a political prisoner in Bahrain 1975-6. Worked as a senior researcher and consultant at Team International, Beirut; Arab Development Institute, Beirut and, UN-ESCWA. His current research interest is on the role NGOS in the democratization processes in the Gulf region. His published books in Arabic include, ‘Conditions and needs and needs of Working Women in Bahrain (1983) ‘Civil Resistance’ (1986), The Unfinished Business – State Building in Bahrain, (2001 published in Arabic in 2001 and 2004). His most recent publication is Constitutional Reforms and Political Participation in the Gulf, (co-editor: Giacomo Luciani), GRC, Dubai, 2006 (An Arabic translation forthcoming).
