Thousands of Yemenis rally against US assassination drone attacks

Thousands of Yemenis took to the streets following the Friday Prayers to call for an end to the deadly US drone attacks and Washington and Saudi Arabia’s interference in the internal affairs of their country.

The demonstrators urged the government to sever ties with Washington, saying they would only be free after the US ambassador is kicked out. They also called for the expulsion of US Marines from their country.

The demonstrators congratulated the Palestinians on their victory at the UN a day after the world body, despite strong opposition from Israel and the US, voted overwhelmingly to upgrade Palestine’s status from "observer entity" to "observer non-member state."

The observer state status grants Palestinians access to UN agencies and the International Criminal Court where they could file complaints against Israel. The upgrade also allows the Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN and improves their chances of joining UN agencies.

The vote is seen as a long-sought victory for the Palestinians, but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for Israel and the United States.
