Bahrain Medical Society President Dr Ahmed Jamal, told Khaleej Times on Wednesday that his society along with the Bahrain Bar Society and Bahrain Society of Engineers had decided to turn into unions to serve their members in a better way. He said unions have more powers to fight for the rights of their members.

The three societies have drafted a legislation after reviewing the profession societies’ law and trade union law and referred it to parliament to take up their case next week.

“We expect lawmakers will help us enhance our profession and to safeguard our interests,” Dr Jamal said.

“In the last three weeks, societies’ representatives have been engaged in a series of meetings to come out with the bill that is expected to enhance our rights and authorities.”

Dr Jamal said that the three societies would push to make the minister of justice the responsible official to give permission to become union.

Head of the Parliamentary Affairs Panel Khalil Marzooq supported the legislation and said like political societies, the minister of justice should be the responsible official to handle the establishment of unions of different professions. He said a meeting was held with the three societies’ representatives on Sunday which reviewed that the bill doesn’t clash with the constitutional principles.
