Addressing the 64th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York yesterday, the Emir said that many serious crises of the world were further exacerbated when the influential nations decided to transfer the tackling of the most important issues of war, peace and progress from the United Nations to another setting.

“Going back to the authority of the United Nations is not only necessary to solve intractable crises like the one in the Middle East, but is also vital to realise hopes that can be attained only by a legitimate international consensus within an order agreed on,” the Emir said.

The UN session was also attended by H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Acting Minister of Business and Trade H E Dr Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah, Director of the Emir’s Office H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN H E Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasser.

In his speech, the Emir also reiterated the importance of small states, who make up the majority of the United Nations members, in the global body’s framework and called on the major powers to accord them due importance, and also criticised bigger nations for undermining the contributions small states can make in finding a solution to the global issues.

The Emir said that it is time to go back to the UN as it is a framework that accommodates everyone, and provides a venue which is recognised by all and a charter accepted by all nations.
