The UAE, which chairs the Arab Group at the UN, also called on the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development to act for halting all illegal practices committed by the occupier which negatively affect socio-economic development and degrade dignity and value of human being.

These calls were made by H.E. Ahmed Al-Jarman, the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, before the 17th session of the Committee whose works started Monday and last until mid-May.

”Development in parts of the Arab region is still facing big obstacles.

Occupation in the occupied Arab territories has caused severe damages to natural and water resources,” he said, noting that the Lebanese farmers are still suffering from the unexploded ordnance left by Israel in its 2006 aggression on Lebanon.

”Israeli occupation of the Palestinian lands and Golan Heights since 1967 has caused dangerous deterioration in many sectors including agriculture, rural development, land and water,”he added.

”This situation is unacceptable and the Committee should not distance itself from special requirements of peoples especially those reeling under occupation,”he stressed.

He urged the international community to deliver immediate assistance to developing countries including the Arab countries to help them boost farming production.

On energy, he said a number of countries had taken significant measures to develop renewable energy sources.

”The UAE has offered to host the seat of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), a move which will bring benefits to developing and Arab countries,”he added.
